CHAPTER 9

On the train back to Rome, Millie shifted in her seat, first left, then right, and back again.

“Something wrong?” Edith looked up from her paperback novel and shot Millie a glance that revealed her annoyance.

“No. Nothing’s wrong. Why?” Millie crossed her arms and stared out the window at the countryside racing by.

“Something’s wrong, or else you’ve got a rash on your bottom.” Edith turned the page in her book. “Sit still, will you?”

Millie sighed and tapped her pack around her waist. “I read Walter’s text message.”

“And?” Edith removed her reading glasses.

“I’m fine.” Millie pursed her lips together. “That’s all he wrote.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.” Millie shook her head. “I’m fine.” She used her fingers to make air quotes.

Edith laughed. “Well, at least you know he’s fine.”

“I suppose.”

“He’ll never be accused of being verbose, that’s for sure.” Edith tilted her head. “Right?”

Millie laughed. “Right.”

The two friends laughed on the train so loudly, passengers turned to stare at them.
